Consul General George Monyemengene, Consul Gugulethu Gingqi and Ms. Bing Alo-Villareal visited the State of Kentucky to attend its Annual World Trade Day and Worldfest events in Louisville, KY from 28-30 August 2013.  They met with senior officers of the Kentucky World Trade Center, the Louisville Office for Globalization, and ISCO Industries.

On 28 August 2013, Consul General George Monyemangene met with Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear and Secretary Larry Hayes at Frankfort.  The Consul General extended an invitation for the State of Kentucky to undertake a trade mission to South Africa and to co-host a business seminar on "Doing business with South Africa and Africa" in the future.  View more photographs.

Discussion on "Doing Business in South Africa"

A cocktail reception and business discussion on "Doing Business in South Africa" with ABSA's ALD Program delegates was hosted by the South African Consulate General and Brand SA on Wednesday, 17 July 2013.

The first refrigerated vessel, Nagato Reefer, docked on 3 July 2013 at Philadelphia’s Holt Terminal in Gloucester, NJ.  Onboard were +/- 245,000 cartons of clementines, navel and cara cara oranges.  Some early citrus, including Star Ruby grapefruit arrived in June in containers.

Also onboard was King Citrus, South Africa Summer Citrus’ new friendly mascot.  “King Citrus is key to our branding initiative,” said Suhanra Conradie, CEO of the Western Cape Citrus Producers Forum.  “South Africa Summer Citrus logo has long included unique elements to South Africa- the lion being the most prominent.  King Citrus is a visual extension of its tagline Pride of Our Land – an obvious connection to a pride of lions and an accurate description of pride our growers take in sending premium citrus fruit to the U.S.”  Read more.

The South African Consulate General welcomed a delegation of South African manufacturers and exporters from the Western Cape led by WESGRO, the economic development agency of the Western Cape Province. The South African Pavilion at the 2013 New York International Gift Fair will showcase home and lifestyle products such as home textiles, furniture, wooden furnishings, gifts and tabletop items, bed bath and body, ceramics and personal and body care products. More.


Economic Developments in Africa with Focus on South Africa's Role

Dr. Dominick Salvatore gave a talk on economic development in Africa with a focus on South Africa's role to members of the South African community in New York City.

Dr. Dominick Salvatore is Distinguished Professor of Economics and the Director of the Ph.D. Program in Economics at Fordham University in New York City. He is Honorary Professor at the Shanghai Finance University, Hunan University and University of Pretoria; Visiting Professor at various universities, including University of Rome (2003-2012), American University in Cairo (2007), University of Pretoria (2009, 2012), Peking University (2009-2012), University of Trieste (1996-2002), and University of Vienna (1995-2003). Dr. Salvatore is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences and past Chairman of its Economics Section. He is also the past president of the North American Economic and Finance Association (NAEFA) and the International Trade and Finance Association (ITFA). He is a Consultant to the United Nations, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Economic Policy Institute, and several multinational corporations and global banks. He is the co-editor of the Journal of Policy Modeling and past co-editor of Open Economies Review and The American Economist, as well as past Editor of the Handbook Series in Economics, Greenwood Press. He has given more than 500 lectures around the world, was awarded the Achievement Award by the City of University of New York in 1997, and was nominated for the 2010 National Medal of Science awarded by the President of the United States.

The South African Consulate General co-hosted a business networking seminar with the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce on 29 November 2012. Among subjects discussed include the dynamic trade and investment opportunities in South Africa, one of the most sophisticated emerging markets and the newest member of the BRICS group of nations, and what the country can offer to New York-based companies.


Walmart, South Africa Citrus Growers celebrate benefits of export program

In celebration of a long-term relationship that brings delicious South African Citrus to U.S. consumers, Walmart has kicked off a week-long celebration of South Africa for consumers at Walmart stores throughout the northeast region. Walmart executives and leaders of South Africa’s Western Cape Citrus Producers Forum (WCCPF) hosted consumers to a “Taste of South Africa” on Friday, October 12, 2012 at the Walmart Supercenter in Levittown, PA.
